Zachary Atoui Upstanding Citizen Scholarship

Wakefield Memorial High School senior Zachary Atoui was recently awarded a $2,500 Upstanding Citizen Scholarship from Wakefield Co-operative Bank for his compassion, drive, integrity and leadership.

Zachary was selected by the WMHS Guidance team to receive the scholarship for his serving of the school and local community in a variety of ways, from volunteering at Parent University and introducing families to life at WHMS – to working with rising Warriors at basketball camps and coaching his neighbor's Little League team. In addition, he was a member of the varsity basketball team and provides free instruction to youth basketball players, while also finding time to work at Sports Zone 101, a company that combines the fun of sports with the value of learning.

“Zach brings so much context to this year’s theme of making a difference,” said David Robinson, Director of Guidance at Wakefield Memorial High School. “He has been a Diversity Leader at WMHS and played a helpful role in recruiting New York Times Best Selling Author Clint Smith to speak to our high school students. Zach does it all with an easy going nature, a big smile, and is quick with a thank you and eager to help anyone in need.”

Not only does Zach volunteer in the sports world, he is also a big part of the volunteer work done by St. Joseph's church as a member of the Youth Group. Through that organization, he has worked at soup kitchens, offering meals to the homeless population in and around Wakefield. Zach has helped to organize "Giving Trees" where low income families can get support with holiday celebrations. Once a month, Zach travels to Methuen to St. Basil’s Parish where he helps to serve people in need.

“All of us here at Wakefield Co-operative Bank are in awe of what Zachary has accomplished at his age and deeply admire his desire to help and think of others in such a profound manner,” said Jeff Worth, President & CEO of Wakefield Co-operative Bank.

Zachary is slated to attend Gordon College in the fall to study physical therapy.
